Trophy Club of Apalachee Logo Design

Trophy Club of Apalachee is a golf course located along the Apalachee River in Dacula, Georgia, that works with golfers of all levels to improve their skills, training, and overall game. When Trophy Club of Apalachee approached VDG earlier this year about a rebrand that would give the company an elevated, high-end feel, we were thrilled to take on the challenge. To achieve the desired look, we chose a clean, elegant san-serif font for the typography. In a nod to what Trophy Club is known for, we incorporated golf clubs in the logo in a way that felt natural as to not overpower the overall design.

Tequila Mama Taqueria Logo Design

Tequila Mama Taqueria, which opened at Suwanee Town Center in March, has completely reworked the look and feel of the space from the previous tenant. The new restaurant boasts a fun, lively atmosphere, and patrons are greeted at the entrance by two giant mariachis from Guadalajara, Mexico. The restaurant has a bright, bold color palette along with an open-air bar and a dog-friendly patio. Tequila Mama also hosts events such as Latin Night, Glow Parties, and National Tequila Day. 

Tequila Mama’s menu is a fusion of Latin American and Asian cuisines. In addition to traditional tacos and burritos, the restaurant also puts their unique flavors into “bowls,” such as the La Cantina, Bulgogi and Cubano, all of which have been extremely popular since their opening. 

When Tequila Mama approached us about working with them, we were thrilled. We started by designing their logo which incorporates their funky, colorful style, while also being simple and memorable. The “TMT,” which is seen in the upper right side of the design, is based on a Victorian shape and has since been pulled out of the primary logo design and is used on its own as a secondary design throughout their restaurant and social sites.  While this acronym primarily stands for Tequila Mama Taqueria, it can playfully be used to mean “Too Much Tequila.” After designing the logo, we began to really develop the feel of the brand while designing their menu; we focused this design around the bright colors, an eclectic style and their iconic “mama.” We are currently still working with Tequila Mama by managing their social media and assisting with their printed media, such as postcards displayed on their tables in the restaurant.

Atlanta Sprout Film Festival Invitation Design

Hi-Hope Service Center presented its fourth annual Sprout Film Festival on May 4, 2019. The annual event presents films that cover areas of artistry and intellect produced by and for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

The goal of the Sprout Film Festival is to accurately portray people with disabilities in order to make the general public more aware of the important issues in and around this population. There were 11 different stories featured at this year’s film festival, each highlighting the brilliance, uniqueness, and talents of these individuals. 

For this event, Veugeler Design Group designed the invitation that was distributed to event attendees. The design was informative and the visuals focused on a few of the different stories included in the festival. This simple illustration allowed the audience to immediately know that the event was a film festival, while the top half of the design featured detailed information about the event. We enjoyed working with Hi-Hope to create this invitation and help spread the word about this special event and the talents of those whose stories were told.

Bowman Fly Fishing Handout Design

Bowman Fly Fishing is a one-stop shop for everything fishing! Booking a trip with Bowman Fly Fishing gives customers all the fun of fishing with none of the hassle of having to purchase supplies or choose the right locations. Simply pick a date and Bowman will confirm and suggest a location based on your level of expertise and what you want to catch. On the day of your trip, they will provide all the gear you need — just show up and reel ’em in!

VDG recently worked with Bowman Fly Fishing to produce a 4” x 9” card to be used as a handout. The back of the handout details the different trips the company offers, along with their corresponding prices and contact information. The front of the handout shows several customers holding their prized possessions after a fun day of fishing. This handout was created as a quick reference guide for potential customers to be able to easily review the trip options offered, as well as have a visual of some previous fishing experiences hosted by Bowman.

Summer Porch Jam Poster Wins Design Award

In the summer of 2018, the City of Suwanee debuted a brand-new event. Summer Porch Jam had the feel of an old-fashioned summer block party, featuring food trucks, alcoholic beverages, and musicians playing outdoors at unusual venues throughout Old Town Suwanee: the Mayor’s front porch, for instance.

Summer Porch Jam is part of Make Music Day — an international celebration of music. Launched in 1982 in France, the event is held on the Summer Solstice every year in more than 750 cities in 120 countries; Suwanee’s Summer Porch Jam was the first Make Music Day event in the state of Georgia.

Veugeler Design Group was tasked with designing a poster for the event. The overall design was inspired by the lighthearted feel of a warm summer day in the South. The soft color palette combined with the clean type and layout was influenced by a collection of vintage and retro music posters. Placing the guitar in the center draws your eyes vertically throughout the design, providing an even balance of imagery and text. The music notes floating out of the guitar add a slight touch of motion, wakening a sense of encouragement to stop and enjoy the music.

Our poster design for the Summer Porch Jam was awarded Bronze for Best Promotional Poster at the Southeast Festivals & Events Association’s 2019 Kaleidoscope Awards. The award was presented at the Southeast Festivals & Events Association’s annual conference held in February 2019 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

Capitalizing on Great Design

Make a donation. Give the gift. With your support.

You may have seen these key phrases on advertisements, or even shed a tear at the ASPCA’s commercials with Sarah Mclachlan’s “Angel” playing in the background. These calls-to-action are a few tools that non-profit organizations incorporate into their campaigns to help meet their fundraising goals.

Over the years we have been honored to work with local non-profit organizations such as HI-HOPE and Annandale Village to increase their exposure and help their fundraising projects become successful. Both HI-HOPE and Annandale have an established brand, but for capital campaigns it’s important to develop a separate brand for a specific charity event. A great example of this is HI-HOPE’S Harvest Moon Gala. The event was held on a beautiful farm in the fall with elegant rustic details. We took those elements and incorporated them into the logo, and then carried those design components over to other graphic assets such as invites, eblasts, and print materials.

Getting the word out and making sure you have all the correct information about your event is essential to the success of the fundraiser. Incorporating the right marketing materials not only keeps your donors informed, but helps spread the word to gain new potential donors.

Working with Annandale Village, we created different marketing materials for their biggest fundraising event of the year, Jazzy Thing, which brings in more than a thousand attendees. Part of those printed materials included the invitation, response card, postcards, flyers and posters, just to name a few.

The big get-away travel raffles are a highlight of Jazzy Thing. Keeping the same branding for the event, we designed a separate postcard to emphasize the raffles, but also maintained the importance and message of the overall event. Kiss-A-Pig is another anticipated part of Jazzy Thing, in which community leaders campaign and compete for donations. We designed pledge cards that were incorporated into the marketing materials for each individual candidate to hand out to help gain exposure and donations.

In your marketing campaign, focus on integrating the designs into a digital format. If your non-profit has a website, not only should you include a calendar so donors can see upcoming events, but also include a separate page for the event itself. That way it not only draws people to your site, but keeps your viewers informed and up-to-date on the event. Take full advantage of the different social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Social media not only helps reach your donors faster, but increases the amount of viewers reached. Whether it’s on your website or social media, make sure to have a donate button or a link listed that is clear and easy to access allowing people to make a donation to your event.

Even after your event is over, your campaign is still not quite finished. A well-designed and thoughtful thank you card is not only polite, but a great way to make the donors feel special for being part of the success of the event. It’s a great way to capitalize on the brand and designs one last time after a successful campaign while still making an impact.

Employee Spotlight: Brian Hassinger

Brian Hassinger is our Senior Graphic Designer. He just recently celebrated his 6-year anniversary with VDG! Brian has a strong passion for design and loves getting the opportunity to showcase that here at VDG.

How long have you worked at VDG?
           6 years.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I have this memory of being a kid in the grocery store with my mom when someone asked me that question, to which I responded “rich.” But I probably wanted to be a midfielder for Manchester United most. 
Favorite Hobby: 
Watching football/tv/movies with my wife.
Favorite food?
I’d have to say it’s a toss up between french fries, steak, tacos, burgers, bacon and almost anything sweet. 
Something you can’t live without?
 My wife, family, dogs. Probably smart-assery as well. I can’t help it, it’s genetic.
Secret talent?
I’m really good at trivia. I have a wealth of useless knowledge that brings me no additional wealth.
Interesting factoid?
I’m not all that interesting. I have a fairly extensive collection of single malt scotch. Does that count? 
Why do you enjoy working at VDG?
Because it’s a great place to work. We have awesome people that work well together and I like being part of a team that does work we can be proud of.   
What advice would you give to someone who wanted a career in graphic design? Find a program where professors have industry experience to pass on to you. Never stop learning.

Employee Spotlight: Shay Harbaugh

Shay Harbaugh is one of those people who truly lives and breathes great design. If you have ever visited our instagram page, then you have more than likely seen her talented hand-lettering designs!  To say that she is passionate about the design industry as a whole, is an understatement. Since joining the team in 2012, Shay has stepped up to the plate as an instructor, leader and role model at VDG.

How long have you worked at VDG? Six Years

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Growing up I always wanted to be a Paleontologist. I’ve always been fascinated and obsessed with Dinosaurs and loved learning about them. Some of my favorite movies are “The Land Before Time” and of course “Jurassic Park”.

Favorite Hobby: Hand-Lettering

Favorite food: BBQ

Something you can’t live without: Traveling. I love to travel and experience new places and adventures!

Secret talent: Finding a great clearance deal while shopping.

Interesting factoid: 

I received the Red Cross Award for saving someone’s life. When I was a lifeguard there was a kid that was unresponsive. The other lifeguard on duty and I acted fast and performed CPR and rescue breathing which saved the his life.

Why do you enjoy working at VDG?

I love the environment and the amazing friendships I have made here at VDG!  I come to work and I get to do what I love! I have the opportunity to be creative with my designs all while hanging out with my friends and laughing! It’s a very unique environment and one that I am proud to be a part of.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted a career in design?

Never stop creating even if you get creative block. I try to hand-letter and design everyday and even on the days I am sick or I feel stuck I push through because it helps you grow.

I would also say you need to be able to take criticism and feedback on your work. Constructive criticism helps you become a better designer and can help you build your problem solving skills.

How Colors In Marketing Can Help Improve Your Brand Recognition

As children, along with learning our ABC’s and 123’s, we also learned about our reds, yellows and blues. While growing up we used colors to help identify objects and shapes. I can hold up a card that has just the word banana and one would immediately think of the color yellow. Even as adults, we still use color association with shapes, but instead of looking at a flash card you may be looking at a logo or a print ad. Colors play an important role in our lives; such as effectively illustrating our emotions, weather and culture, just to name a few. One of the most important roles that colors have today is a starring role in communication within advertising and marketing.
Over the years, communicating through colors has become more important than ever in design and advertising because colors play a huge role in brand recognition that is important for a brand’s identity. Take for example the Target logo: if you take away the text and just have the red and white circles, you immediately recognize it as the Target brand. If you change those red circles to blue, it would become less recognizable even though you just changed the color and nothing else. If a company decides to change the color scheme of its logo, it can have a direct negative effect on the business. By changing the color, you are risking changing the mood and tone associated with your company, which can also change the mood of your audience, and how they look and react to your business.
Choosing the right colors for your brand and staying consistent has been proven to be very influential among consumers. In fact, a study has been done that shows colors can help “increase brand recognition by up to 80 percent.” (Source: University of Loyola, Maryland study). When choosing th right color combination for your brand, the type of business you have should be considered. Many restaurants, for example, use reds in their logos and branding because in the psychology of colors, the color red has been linked to appetite and hunger. Various doctor’s offices use blues in their marketing because blues represent trust and cleanliness; and when I think of a hospital, I immediately think of two words: clean and sterile.
The right color combination can help your business grow and assist in conveying your message. That’s one of our many jobs as graphic designers; to learn about color theories so that we can help your business succeed by using color as a nonverbal communication strategy in your brand. Personally, I love color and am not afraid to use it as a designer; in fact, I garner inspiration from color and embrace my passion by conveying it in my designs. Like Robert Henri said, “Color is only beautiful when it means something.” So, when thinking about your brand ask yourself, do my colors have meaning and make sense? Do they communicate the right message? Most importantly, take a look at your business’s logo; would it have more of an impact with a different color? ■
